São Bartolomeu dos Regatos is a rural parish of the Azores municipality of Angra do Heroísmo with 26.44 ksqm of area and 1 983 inhabitants (2011), which corresponds to a population density of 75 inhabitants per ksqm. It is located in the south of the island of Terceira, about 7 km northwest of the city of Angra do Heroísmo, occupying a territory that extends from the coast to the eastern slope of the Serra de Santa Bárbara. The parish was created around 1560, autonomizing the population nucleus that since the 1470s had developed around the place of Regatos. The parish of São Bartolomeu is located in the south of Terceira Island, occupying a roughly rectangular territory, although with a considerable enlargement in the inland part of the island, which extends from the highlands of the south coast to the central plateau and the southeast slope of the Serra de Santa Bárbara. To the west it borders the parish of Cinco Ribeiras; to the east with the parishes of São Mateus da Calheta, Terra Chã and Posto Santo; and to the north with the parish of Altares. With the exception of its extreme northwest, which is located on the slope of the Serra de Santa Bárbara, extending to the southeastern edge of the Caldeira, the territory of the parish is inserted in the transition zone between the Santa Bárbara Massif and the Guilherme Moniz Massif, characterized by fissural volcanism, with emission of very fluid basalts. Successive basalt outflows eventually overlaid the pre-existing geological structures, creating a plateau whose edge descends relatively steeply southward (slopes exceeding 40%), ending in an extensive, flattened coastal platform that descends gently to the coast. The coast of the parish is marked by an almost linear coastal cliff whose altitude rarely exceeds 30 m, decreasing towards the east, approaching 15 m at Chanoca, border with the parish of São Mateus da Calheta.
